Statement
Growing up in a Vietnamese Catholic household I loved listening to fantastical Asian myths and legends, eventually becoming interested in Biblical stories at the end of my adolescence. My interest in these tales (specifically Christian and Vietnamese) led to me
educating myself on these source materials, allowing a glimpse into what the world the subjects live in. Mixing genres and cultures is something I’ve found being very common in a lot of Biblical art but there are not many that are Vietnamese in mainstream culture.
The materials I choose to use are meant to reflect on my upbringing being born to a working class first generation immigrant family. Most of the surfaces are found and used knowing that they would not last as long nor be as efficient as using conventional surfaces but that is part of the idea. This is to show a kind of “make the best with what you have” type of mentality I have in regards to artmaking.
