Statement
I am a Vietnamese-American visual artist who mixes Buddhist and Taoist iconography with Catholic subjects and Western painting techniques for mythological works to express my spiritual/religious beliefs. The mythical works represent an effort to form my religious identity between Catholicism and native Vietnamese beliefs developing skills in visual worldbuilding to visualize said spiritual beliefs. The juxtaposed iconography provokes discussions about the nature of cultural appropriation and adoption concerning Vietnamese culture.
Being raised in a Vietnamese Catholic household, my experience was a syncretization of two traditions with their similarities and differences. This often led to cultural paradoxes such as the dismissal of fortune telling but an obsession with feng shui. My unique upbringing allowed me to find a space between cultures where I explore the history of Eastern and Western religion and philosophy while crafting a new hyperreality.
