Biography

James Kane (b. 1990, Baton Rouge, LA), received his BFA from Louisiana State University in 2014 and his MFA from Indiana University in 2022. His decade of professional experience includes arts education, commissions, and positions in museums and galleries. He has shown nationwide, including exhibitions in Birmingham, New Orleans, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. He is based in Baltimore.

Statement
My paintings question ideas of classic masculinity and male camaraderie, which teeter on the line between friendly and physical. The compositions challenge viewers to interpret their ambiguity, implying rather than defining the relationships between the figures. Portraiture is an opportunity for me to hone in on an idea, lovingly teasing tropes of maleness out of the subjects. I gather historical and contemporary images, creating digital sketches that are often cobbled together from multiple sources, and transfer them onto wood panels or canvases. Many of my sources are black and white, which allows me to intuit the palette for each painting, saturating the space to create a cohesive mood that the figures inhabit. Oil paint allows me the flexibility to scrape, sand, and layer onto the surface, a process of excavation that mirrors my obsession with hidden history and queer identity.
