Baltimore Neighborhoods:
Capturing the beauty of the moments
These 6 paintings represent a fraction of the upcoming exhibit.
Artist - José Perez
Statement
I moved to Baltimore in the summer of 2020. Very quickly I learned that the beauty of the city lies in the neighborhoods and within the people.
Over the past year, I’ve been documenting neighborhood gathering places through my art. Every week, neighbors from all over the city gather in coffee shops, corner bars and breweries. They take a break from the work week to recharge their batteries, get away from the kids, relax after work or catch up with friends. These local spots are the heartbeat of their communities; neighborhood oases, providing needed respite from the long grind to the weekend.
With all of my art supplies in my backpack, I capture the beauty in candid moments with watercolors and ink. The watercolors chosen for this collection were completed entirely on location.

Biography
José Perez grew up in the graffiti culture of Urban NY. He was heavily influenced by the sights and sounds of his environment. While still in elementary school, José would ride his bicycle to the Community Center of the Housing Projects where he would take part in a free art class. There, he was taught the foundations of art. Between art classes José would collect unwanted magazines and would obsessively copy the photographs refining the skills he was taught.
He has continued his artistic journey throughout his life, refining his technique, learning new skills and exploring new mediums. Recognized for his dramatic use of shadows and details, José's art continues to reflect back to his urban roots. He art can be found in local as well as International collections. |
