Statement
Nature vs Nurture reflects my lifelong appreciation of the natural world. Growing up in Michigan, I spent much of my time outdoors. In addition to hunting and fishing, much of the visual art I encountered was filled with wildlife, rugged landscapes, and quiet forests. My earliest paintings were landscapes, and while narrative and figurative work have since taken the lead in my practice, elements of nature are often present.
In this series, lush flora and fauna, along with surreal hybrids and anthropomorphic characters, inhabit the same visual space as the figure. Humor, symbolism, and storytelling merge with the detailed and whimsical landscape and wildlife imagery, recontextualize my figurative work.
Nature vs Nurture also speaks to a deeper conceptual thread. Are we shaped more by our biology or our environment? This body of work explores how we evolve, how we relate to ourselves and others, and how the wildness within us often mirrors the world around us.
