Artist - Michelle Spiziri
Statement
As a painter, I am interested in what happens when color, form, movement, and shape interact with each other forming their own dialogue.
Painting for me is as much about self discovery as it is about visual space.
I paint in response to what my subconscious mind makes room for. I'm using art to escape from old patterns towards a freedom of undeniable love of the self.
I want all emotions and all parts to be present. I paint to make a place for all the parts of myself that seek expression, even if I don’t want to see or love all the parts that make myself.
The works and paintings are finished when they flirt on a lively tension of movement and rest. The next work knows a little about the previous, but still cannot explain itself. They are always moving into unknown territory. They are their own energy.

Michelle Spiziri was born at the Naval Base Hospital in Key West Florida in 1967 but grew up in Lancaster PA. She is the second of 5 children. Michelle’s early influence with art came through her Aunt Christine who is an artist and extraordinary teacher. She introduced, guided, and mentored Michelle throughout her youth and into high school where her art teacher, Richard Ressel, pushed her even further. Between the two of them they helped Michelle take the steps needed to apply to art school. Michelle began college in 1986 at the Pennsylvania School For The Arts, now PCAD, located in Lancaster, PA. She graduated from PSA&D in 1990 with a Diploma of Fine Art after changing her major from Commercial to Fine Art. While there, She had the incredible opportunity to travel to Paris. It was there, she says, where she woke up. After graduating She moved to Baltimore to attend MICA and lived for many years at the Artist Housing Cooperative where she was surrounded by many other creatives.
In 1992 Michelle graduated with a Degree of Fine Art from the Maryland Institute College of Art. After a year she went back to school to Towson University where she received her Art Teaching certification for grades K-12 in Disciplined Based Art Education. Since then she’s been active showing her paintings in many Baltimore galleries and other places in MD from City Hall to restaurants and in Pennsylvania galleries. Many of Michelle’s paintings have been published in literary magazines.Since college, Michelle has worked in a variety of industries. She had worked on the set of Homicide, Life on the Street and other made for TV commercials and side sets, faux finished for Twin Diamond Studio, steamer and bar tender at the famous John Steven LTD in Fells point, fitness instructor, advertising and medical sales professional, art teacher, actress, and last but not least, owner, founder, and conceptualizer of Type A Home, a Home Wellness & Lifestyle Management Company from 2008-2020. Since 2016 Michelle has re-emerged as a full time artist. As an Intuitive artist, her work takes on morphing forms and connects instinctively with the viewer. Her work is colorful, illustrative, compositionally edgy, and emotive. She primarily works in acrylics and mixed media in a variety of sizes and substrates. Michelle and her husband, plus two rescue cats, live in Baltimore County. At one time they had a small farm-ette with rescue race horses and 30 Nigerian Dwarf goats but have since simplified. |
