Celebrating 50 years of sketching
Artist - Henry Johnson
Statement
It feels strange to me that others consider me an artist, but I do agree that art has been a foundation of my work and life. I just create. I would like for everyone to create some kind of art, to plant something and work in nature, and to decorate their homes from their own inspirations and passions. I am a man of little words and want this work in this extensive collection to speak for itself. These pieces are being shown to the public for the first time. Collections of renderings for buildings I have worked on over the years as an interior designer, and private paintings of things I have surrounded myself with, in and around, my home. Creations I made to pass time. To capture an object or scene in my vision, in a way a photo couldn't attempt to do.
Biography
Henry Johnson was born in Blackville, South Carolina during World War II where his family had lived since the early Eighteenth Century as farmers and merchants. Rural southern culture, education, and family life blended with English studies forged a philosophy around art and expression that continues to this day. Eighty years ago education in the Classical Style always included foreign languages, drawing, painting, European travel, all forms of “hands-on” work experience and is exemplified in his work over the past 50 years. Henry’s entire life and education has been around architectural history, classic interior design, and all forms of art. His degrees include an AA, a BFA, and an MFA, but most of his vision and education has come from immersing himself in nature, gardens, books, old buildings, historical objects and beautiful things. He began working as a designer professionally in 1966 and in 1976 he became co-founder and partner in the design firm Johnson/Berman. Henry continues interior design work to this day. |
