Timely Transitions
Artist - Nancy Keene Fishel
Statement
Time moves quickly, changing from one moment to the next, however art can freeze those moments into images that stay the same for all time. As I observe people walking through streets and a variety of public places, I am enthralled with the always changing relationships of individuals to their environments and one another as they move through space. Aiming to capture the dynamism and constantly changing relationships of these moving crowds, I create digital paintings, that focus on composition and movement; as well as telling the story of that moment. These digital compositions are then mined for images to transform into block prints. This allows me to use multiple media to illustrate moments in time through various lenses. Movement through space that reflects the ephemeral and inevitable passage of time.

Biography
Nancy Keene Fishel is a visual artist who currently works in Maryland and Delaware. Ms. Fishel’s work focuses on observations of people moving through spaces, both at home and abroad. The dynamism of human movement, passing of time, the energy of our ever-changing lives and interaction of people are a focus of these compositions. Dance, play, music, art, walking, running, cycling, becoming lost in a crowd, spending time with friends and being alone, all are inspirations for her work. Life, time and people do not stand still, and she strives to capture those moments in time.
Much of Ms. Fishel’s work is in series, sometimes starting with a digital painting and interpreting images into paint and prints. These groupings begin with photos from personal travels and experiences and layer multiple images to create a digital painting, losing the photographs in the process. Sections of the digital painting are selected that are then used to create individual images or multi-sectioned compositions using both block printing and painting. Many of the print compositions and paintings are multi-sectional, resulting in series that are related, but not identical. Recent series include Walk and Wheels, Locations Locomotion, All the Children Dance and Play, and the Museum series. Nancy Keene Fishel is the president and gallery coordinator for the Towson Arts Collective in Towson, Maryland, an active member of the Hamilton Arts Collective in Baltimore, Maryland and shows at a variety of galleries and restaurants in the region. For twenty-three years she taught art in Baltimore County Public Schools, having the privilege to work with students in grades K-12. She also was an adjunct professor at Towson University with their Arts Integration Institute, teaching graduate students the connections between the arts, reading and writing in school settings. Recently she was a docent at the Baltimore Museum of Art, and still meets with that group regularly to discuss books, art and other closely related subjects. |
