Artist - Steph Stevenson
Statement
As an artist growing up in South Jersey, surrounded by various environments from the Pine Barrens to the beach, Stephanie has continuously drawn inspiration from the natural world. Her artwork can be described as beautiful yet grotesque, visually and thematically, just as nature is itself. Her intent is to simultaneously attract and disturb the viewer and to create a slight feeling of uneasiness through contrasting imagery. Her fascination with the obscure and ironic forces of nature is often reflected upon in even her smallest pieces.
Biography
Steph Stevenson (b. 1994) grew up in the small town of Clayton, NJ, surrounded by woods where her fascination with the natural world began. She spent much of her time secluded in nature exploring different plants, animals and terrains. Her relationship and fascination with the natural world is evident in her art, where she explores various types of flora and fauna and their relationship to one another. Steph went on to attend Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, PA, where she graduated in 2016 with a BFA in Illustration. During her Junior year of college, Steph landed an internship at Devilfish Ink, a graphic arts and printing studio, which in turn lead to a full time job for the next 5 years. In 2020 her career path shifted in order to be able to put focus back on her personal gallery work. Her first gallery experience was in 2017 during “Philly Loves Bowie Week” where she displayed a Bowie-dedicated piece at Ruckus Gallery. Steph’s work has since been displayed at Pitman Gallery and Arts Center, The Convent Philly, Gristle Art Gallery, Artwhirl Gallery, Revolution Art Gallery and more. She also had a feature in a publication of Numinous Magazine’s “Occult” issue in 2019. In between working on pieces for shows, Steph often attends events and markets to vend her artwork and merchandise. Her current focus is split between gallery work of her dark-surreal paintings and as well as her horror/occult themed art and merchandise which she vends at various markets throughout the year.
