Artist - Scott G. Brooks
Statement
The work in “Self Contained” was created over the last two years. It has been a challenging time for the world and for myself personally. As an artist, being in lockdown gave me the gift of time. As a gay man this was my second pandemic and I was able to use a few of the lessons that the HIV epidemic offered and was able to focus primarily on my work. So many great artists have lived through pandemics and created amazing work, and unfortunately we also lost a great many artists. I looked at it as an opportunity and it gave me the luxury of time.
This is my first large solo exhibit since moving to Baltimore in 2015. Historically, when an artist moved to another city it was usually a time of change and growth, and I found that true for me as well. I lived and worked in Washington DC for many years so it was a big change for me. The city itself is much more accepting and supportive, allowing me to pursue my work and push myself further.
My work is primarily figurative. Whatever else is happening the figure is always first and foremost my priority. I use models in my work, and the narrative evolves from there. Some pieces are very planned out and others are more random and spontaneous. I’m inspired by many eras including the pre-raphaelites and northern renaissance, and while my work may appear to some as a throwback to art of the past, I use the latest technology to create it, including digital photography, scanners, printers and other state of the art equipment.
Our time here is very brief, and while I desire my work to be seen and appreciated in the present, my hope is that it will be appreciated by future generations just as much.

Scott G. Brooks (b. 1960 - Flint, MI) is a figurative artist living and working in Baltimore, Maryland. He has been an active painter since the age of 17 when he was hired to paint murals and kept that momentum since. Scott received a BFA from the University of Michigan (83') and moved to Washington DC in 1990 where he lived for before moving to Baltimore in 2016. His art borders on the surreal and ranges from portraiture to complex narratives. Scott incorporates historical and religious imagery with current social, psychological, and political issues, then infuses them with a dark sense of humor. Scott has created artwork for an extensive list of clients, including The Washington Post, Metro Weekly, The U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Navy, as well as providing illustrations for children's publications. Scott has exhibited his work internationally, including: beinArt Gallery, Australia; Last Rites Gallery, NYC; Mondo Bizarro Gallery, Rome; and CoproGallery, Los Angeles. The exhibit at Gallery Blue Door is his first solo show since 2015.
