Artist - Kevin Herdeman
Statement
For this exhibit I tried to get as many pieces together that would, in some way, make whoever sees them laugh or just feel a little joy. My whole point in making art is to have an end product that displays well and hopefully brings some kind of joy to the viewer. I generally try to keep some kind of deep “meaning” out of my art. I’ve found that most collectors don’t like my approach in that aspect, but I want the viewer to feel however the work makes them feel. It’s open for their own meaning. I really put this collection together in hopes that even if you’re not into BigFoot, you’d still smile or enjoy what you see. Maybe even enough to have one on your shelf or wall. I like making these figures and I want people to like them as well. Sometimes I feel if I put too much meaning into them, it may not be something that the viewer would agree with and in turn it ends up putting limitations on the piece. I tried to keep these simple and fun, that’s basically the bottom line. I just make what I want to see and hope the viewer digs it as much as I do.

Kevin Herdeman (b. 1981 ) is a father of 2 who makes weird “MeltMonsters” in between his day job working as a pipe fitter, making and releasing music (currently - Ancient Radiations and an “internet band” named UglyHuman) and being a dad and husband. Kevin is a self taught artist and has been creating since he was a boy. He is a painter and has also created artwork with glass but when he and his wife had their first child in 2010, he move from glass to plastic to keep a safer home studio. This is where the MeltMonsters were born. Originally these “sculptures” consisting of strategically melted soft plastic started without fur. They would just be layers of soft plastic resembling aliens and monsters and just about anything colorful and fun. Always being a fan of “BigFoot”, he decided to take a stab at making a ”melted” version of the elusive cryptid and fur started being added. They came out just as envisioned so he just stuck with making “SasquatchMelts” for the past handful of years. Kevin has made “melted” versions of real life people, like himself, friends, the guys in DEVO and The AquaBats, Frank Reynolds, Frankenstein, The ElephantMan and the list goes on. He has also recently created the coveted BizarroLand Film Festival award for the 72 Hour Film Debacle. He has shown his work across the nation from bars, festivals, and shops and has collectors across the globe. Gallery Blue Door is thrilled to be one of his few solo exhibits in a gallery.
